The Importance of Quality when Choosing Essential Oils

The Importance of Quality when Choosing Essential Oils

The last few years have seen a huge drive for natural remedies and medicines, including more interest in aromatherapy and essential oils. Many people are looking to move away from chemicals and toxins and into a more healthy product for their skin, their home, their kids, and so on. There are so many different essential oils to choose from, both in store and online. The purity and quality of essential oils is the most important characteristic.

When looking for a high quality essential oil, look for a company that is in charge of their entire process, from growing and harvesting to distilling, bottling and selling. We don’t know about you, but we’d rather know where our oil comes from, who grew it and handled it, rather than buying it from Amazon and not knowing where it truly originated.

An essential oil that isn’t 100% pure is at risk of putting harmful chemicals or unnecessary additives into your body, which could lead to irritation or other side effects. When it comes to purity, many essential oil companies will add carrier oils, perfumes, or other additives to their essential oils to produce more bottles, make them smell stronger or sweeter, and to decrease the price of the oil.

A few quick things to look at when considering what essential oils to buy:

Label: Does it list the botanical name – where the oil came from, what plant, tree, flower, etc.? Does it have a distillation date and/or expiration date?

Cost: Essential oils can be very costly, especially if they are of the purest and highest quality. If you see oils that are 50% off, buy one get one free, it’s probably too good to be true.

Testing: The more testing the essential oil company can offer, the better. Have the essential oils been through GC/MS (Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry Analysis), microbial testing, heavy metal testing, etc.?

Secondary Initiatives: Look for companies that have sustainability initiatives or are helping support other communities.

If you are looking for a high quality essential oil, we recommend taking a look at doTERRA. Their pure essential oils are revolutionizing the way families manage their health, harnessing nature’s most powerful elements.
