Essential Oils for Allergies

Spring has officially sprung, which means the season of sneezes, runny noses, and watery eyes is upon us. According to the CDC, seasonal allergies affect around 50 million Americans every year. Springtime allergies are typically the result of pollen and flowering plants, and thus can interfere with outdoor activities. Over-the-counter medications that treat seasonal allergies can be expensive, so many people look for alternative solutions. One such solution is essential oils. In this article, we’ll look at oils that can combat the symptoms of seasonal allergies.

1. Eucalyptus

This oil is an anti-inflammatory and may alleviate allergy-related congestion. Its cooling properties can also help to soothe irritated nasal passages. This oil can be diffused in the air or inhaled from the bottle to address allergy symptoms. Of course, some people can be allergic to eucalyptus itself, so if you’ve never used it before, you’ll want to introduce it with caution, just in case!

2. Lemon

All citrus oils have a reputation for improving the immune system and increasing energy levels. Lemon specifically can potentially clear the sinuses and reduce congestion. Lemon can also be linked to improving your mood and can help you keep a positive attitude during the allergy season! Citrus oils are known to make your skin more sensitive to the sun, so be sure to use sunscreen after exposure. Lemon oil is best diffused or applied to the wrist or neck.

3. Lavender

Lavender is a versatile oil with many uses. It is a calming agent that can help soothe nasal irritation and reduce inflammation. When diffused, it makes its way into the sinuses and can turn your room or office into a peaceful environment. When mixed with a carrier oil, it can also be used as a soothing lotion or added to a relaxing bath.

4. Peppermint

Peppermint oil, when inhaled, can help you breathe easier by reducing inflammation in the nasal passages. It can be diffused or applied to the skin via a carrier oil. Peppermint oil is a common ingredient in oil combinations or “bombs.” When combined with lemon and lavender, it can be used to treat a variety of allergy symptoms, including congestion, headaches, and even anxiety.

5. Tea tree oil

Another popular oil, tea tree oil is also known as an anti-inflammatory. This oil can diffused or applied topically. Tea tree oil is not safe for consumption, so be careful not to ingest it! When using this oil, it is important that you test it on a small area of skin before inhaling since it can trigger allergic reactions in some people.

6. Frankincense

Our final oil can be used to alleviate bronchial symptoms, including coughing and a sore throat. Frankincense is an anti-inflammatory that can be diffused into the air and inhaled directly to combat swelling and irritation in the sinuses. As always, it is important to do your research and practice caution when trying new oils. You should always conduct a skin test before diffusing or inhaling a new oil.
